Are you using vista? If you are, then you have to go into some monitor options in the control panel (it's not the normal display options) and there's an option to switch between external only, both screens, or monitor only. Sorry I can't be more descriptive, but I'm not on my vista machine right now. The best I can describe it is an option screen that has things like wireless settings, brightness, battery options, and sound all in one window.

i'm using XP, and i've done it before, last time all i had to do was close the laptop and the other monitor would take over as default, but this time when i do it, the other monitor just goes blue and says "no signal"
