Racism or dark humor?

Okay, for whatever reason, when I do videos on my digital camera, they only transfer onto my computer as .mov files, but the program I have for editing videos lets me work with almost every file type except .mov files.

So how can I change my .mov files to something else (like .mpeg or .wmv or really anything else)?

Edit: Sorry...yeah I use Windows Vista.

I don't see the button to click to download this software!

Edit: Okay, I made it to this page http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=123082 but there are two different download buttons.  Which one do I want?

Thanks.   I'll try it.  I'm about to kill the program Beth had me download.

I use VLC. It's been a while since I had to change file types, but I'm sure you'd find a guide if you googled "VLC" and "convert".

Something about save/stream.

Way to speak gibberish for me...

I searched it and found this site: http://www.soft29.com/vlc_media_file_converter.html

Downloaded that.  Standby for me to report that it failed.  I'm feeling very discouraged.  This will be the third program I've tried.

It finally worked, but there is a watermark in the middle of the video now that says "Made with an Unregistered version of AVS Video Converter."

Ah, that same thing happened to me as well.  I think that it's best that you just spend the extra money to purchase a program that does what you need it to do - if you really need it.  I tried to do exactly the same thing you're doing but it didn't work.  Like you, when I finally got it to work, it said the exact thing that it said for you.

It really sucks.  It gets your hopes up and then BAM - your dreams come crumbling down.

OK, the best way i can think of to do this with free tools that work under Vista is this:

http://www.radgametools.com/down/Bink/RADTools.exe

Download this tool and then select your file. Then go to convert a tile and at the top of the box that opens sect AVI as the output type. Then convert it (it may bring up a box from there where you just want to select uncompressed)

This will give you a pretty big AVI file.

From here i would shove it into Windows media encoder:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx

64bit one would be best. Haven't got a copy here, but if i remember correctly it was pretty simple to work out what your doing with it.

Can you work out the code?

Make sure you uninstall anything you don't actually use. Otherwise your computer is going to suck.

Anyways, VLC is free, open-source software. While it's not the prettiest thing out there, it's highly effective. And free.

Get it here:
http://vlc-media-player.en.softonic.com/

Here's how you convert:

- Open VLC Player
- File -> Open File
- Browse -> Select File
- Check "Stream/Save", and then go to settings
- Check "File" and enter the new file name
- Check which format you want under "encapsulation method"
- Okay, and Okay.

Lemme know how that pans out for you.

Prism is free, easy to use, video converting software which supports .mov. I'm pretty sure the only limitations the trial has is a 30 day time limit.

You can download either Prism or Prism plus for free.

I have used the free sound conversion software from the same company, and it was pretty damn good.

Avidemux will open most MOV files if I recall correctly, and it is free, open source, and will do other video conversion and some editing tasks too:

Alternatively, mediacoder will do much the same sort of thing:
