This is a statement but isn't necessarily my opinion.. I heard someone say it.

-There is no way you can "responsibly" use drugs since drugs are harmful anyway. If you use drugs your life expectancy will be shorter..

Now this person was talking about illegal drugs and alcohol..

discuss.. I don't know what to think.. and i've done some research.

If prescription drugs can be used responsibly, so can recreational drugs

Extremely false.  There is a safe way to do nearly every drug, if not every single one.

And your life expectancy may actually be longer if you do this.  Take alcohol in relation to heart health, for example.

Well then technically everything has a possibility for danger thus not being able to do anything " responsibly " .

They are wrong. Everyone does things on a day to day basis that are bad for their body. You can use drugs responsibly, it may be hard with certain drugs though. Addicting could lead to denial, making someone think they're still using responsibly when they are actually not.

well, if you beilive that, you must beilive alcohol and ciggarettes or fattyfoods can be used responsibly.
a high fat diet will cut more years off your life than pot ever could, so will ciggaretes...
and did you hear this? if you freeze plastic bottles and still drink out of the, you could get cancer..no fuckin joke...

so honestly, i expect SOMETHING to limit my life span, and i woudl gladly chose drugs becuase so far they have improved many a boring night. No, dropping acid daily, shooting up herion alone and in a dark basement and snoring up your life savings in crack isnt good either... but responsibe use coudl be a joint of two with ur buds and a nice game of golf frisbee..
i see no more harm than in drinking a frozen bottle of water.

Illegal drugs and alcohol carry risks but using responsibly I'd say is when you do what you can to minimize the risks and be informed and in control.

that's an implication that it's impossible to do a risky activity in a responsible way if the risk isn't controlled

just like it's irresponsible to walk down the street because you can't control drunk drivers running you over when you're on the sidewalk

Agreed.

People look down on drugs with complete ignorance.

Seriously - what ISN'T bad for your health these days?

Both "facts" that the statement relies upon (the drugs are harmful and that taking drugs will reduce one's lifespan) are incorrect. Some drugs are harmful. Some drugs decrease your lifespan. Psilocybin mushrooms, for example, have no negative effects associated with them whatsoever (past the possibility of having a negative experience while on them). They are not in the least bit bad for you, and taking them will do nothing to your lifespan.

There is also an implied "fact" in the statement, and this is wrong as well. The entire argument hinges upon the implicit premise that it is impossible to responsibly do something that is harmful to one's body. Diego addressed that one nicely, so I'll just quote him:

that's an implication that it's impossible to do a risky activity in a responsible way if the risk isn't controlled

just like it's irresponsible to walk down the street because you can't control drunk drivers running you over when you're on the sidewalk
