Cans cost .60 and bottles cost $1. We can only buy soda AFTER school, but p.e. students can buy whenever their class is....

At my school, they removed all the carbonated drinks ( soda) from the school dining rooms and from the vending machines.
They also removed most unhealthy foods as well to encourage healthy eating, however most students have a pass now which lets them out of school at break and lunch so they can go buy food from the shop outside.

At my primary( elementary) school we did not have any vending machines and we were not even allowed to bring drinks onto premises other than water.

I say it is good for schools to promote health attitudes to food and drink, but parents should also be encouraging similar habits at home.

I graduated now, but I wished they would have offered healthier stuff in the vending machines.  They didn't really have any healthy options - some granola and juice and stuff, but sometimes all I really wanted was an apple.  If they had taken away all the junk food, people may have bitched, maybe even me, but most of the time I was just hungry for anything.

But it kind of sucked, because even with their granola and juice, some of the junk food was cheaper, so when I was in a bind I just bought trash.  Juice, gatorade, flavored water was $1.25; soda was $1.25 - $0.50, and bottles of plain water were $0.50.  Some people bought a bottle or two of soda EVERY DAY, which would have made me ill and broke... but they probably had jobs.

Yeah, I would have liked it if my school refused to provide us with any soda and junk food.  =/

I really love what my old high school school does with lunch. Tuition included a year long lunch with 1-2 healthy and varied entrees to choose from. The only beverages you could choose from were either juice, milk or water and machines weren't allowed within the school.

Now, I really appreciate how health conscientious the faculty/board are. Ironically, back then I was a bit of a caffeine/pop addict. :)

I rarely buy soda in school but the first day of school, I did buy a powerade in the morning during open period because it's so hot in my school and the water in the drinking fountains is never cold. I was like dying of thirst otherwise I wouldn't have spent the money.
