Subject: what is this phobia called? or why does this happen
i was driving, my boyfriend in the passengers seat, on the highway for a while. we started talking about cruise control and how I never used it or planned to, ever. he turned it on. and something came over me, I could hardly breathe, I was shaking and crying, I didn't like the cruise control being on at all. it was unexpected for me to be so scared of it. but I was. it felt like my throat was closing up.

etc. anyway. I tried researching whatever about that and there's nothing I could find for a 'phobia' of cruise control, i'm assuming its a phobia just because of how severe my reaction was. but I guess I don't know why at all. or what that was about. figured i'd ask anyone else about any opinions they have on this. thnks.

There is no phobia of cruise control and there may not even be a phobia for what happened to you. It may simply be that you got scared because you felt that you didn't have complete control of the car. Some people simply don't like using the cruise control feature on a car, myself included. The feature is mainly designed to keep your car at a steady rate of speed and I feel I can do just as good a job at that, as the car can. What also may have contributed to your reaction is the fact that your boyfriend reached over and turned it on without your permission, and without you expecting him to do so. That was a big mistake on his part. Anytime something is done to a driver without their expecting it can be very dangerous, and could lead to a serious accident, especially if he did something like that in traffic or in inclement weather. It could have been all of these different circumstances coming together that helped lead to your reaction. Next time tell your boyfriend to keep his hands to himself while you're driving.
